Too young to be a grandma

This goes in the "you've got to be kidding me" category. So, get ready.

My sister works for an orthopedic surgeon/rehabilitation group. She texted me earlier today and said that she just had a patient come in who is 5 months older than me (I am currently 37 years and 9 months old) and HAS A GRANDCHILD!!!

A few posts ago, I commented about women having babies in their old age, which I believe is completely irresponsible and ridiculous. I even think I mentioned that people who are old enough to be a grandmother, should not be giving birth. Guess I need to eat those words.

I know that I'm not exactly a young babe anymore, but I'm also not an effing granny.

So, so wrong. On so, so many levels.

  1. That has to be extreme though! You're certainly not grandma stuff yet!!

  2. Thats a kick in the gut. I have really changed my mind frame of how late I would considered having a new baby. I do agree that at some point whether it is medically possibly or not, age should be a consideration. It may not be fair to the child if their parents are too old to attend their high school graduation.

  3. Wow, now that is scary.

Although there is a girl in my block of flats who has just had a kid and it did occur to me the other day I was old enough to be her mother (if I'd had a child at her age).

  4. Followed Mel's blog roundup & stumbled on your post. Holy crap! I'm 37 and 9 months old and cannot *imagine* having a grandchild. Hell, I can't imagine not having to remind my children to wipe themselves. And I'm trying to have another. Not old enough to be a grandma. No way, no how!

(Incidentally, we must have pretty close birthdays!)

  5. My grandma was 34 when my mom had me. A grandma at 34! My mom got her payback when my sister got preg at 16, making my mom a 36 year old grandma. And the cycle continued this year with my sister becoming a grandmother at 38. I, on the other hand, am 41, and clearly do not have the reproduction skills that the rest of the women in my family have. We are adopting, and it's a strange thing to be older with my first child than they were when they became grandmothers!

    Good luck on your journey!
