How old is too old?

Back when I didn’t know about my fertility challenges, I always said I wouldn’t try to have a baby after turning 35. Little did I know.

I’m just about five weeks from my 37th birthday (and three weeks from my 12th wedding anniversary), and I’m technically still trying, albeit, not trying that hard. We’ve kind of given up on the hard core fertility treatments (ran out of embryos) and are now just keeping it to the ol’fashioned nookie-in-the sack. And, I’m waiting until I get to Shanghai to give some Chinese medicine a go.

It’s funny how your perception of what’s old changes the more you age. I can’t say for sure when or if I’ll be a mom, but I’m cool with trying for at least another year or so. After all, I’ve waited this long

Still, it makes me feel crappy when I think about people ten years younger than me with newborns and my girlfriends who have kids who are just a year or two from middle school.

  1. For me, it's my nieces and nephews who have no business having children getting pregnant and having children. I just don't get it sometimes.... Good luck in China!

  2. Sometimes we're just forced to adjust our life plan and if that means trying for a baby a few more years that's perfectly ok too :-)

  3. My perception of old changes every year around my birthday. LOL! Although 35 did hit me over the head and I'm now a few weeks shy of 36 and no closer to and end to this than I was a year ago. Here's to hoping 2010 has a better ending for both of us.

  4. Thanks for the note on my blog. I always had a similar thought. I was always so scared of getting pregnant before I was ready. Little did I know all these issues would arise. I hope the old fashioned trying works for you.

  6. IF does change our perceptions of our life path. It's amazing how these "little" things (eggs, sperm), make our life so dramatically different. I hope you get your BFP soon.

  7. I see "kids" on facebook who are the sons or daughter of old friends of mine. These kids are well into their teens and I have a 9 month old baby. It seems weird. I guess I won't be one of those young "cool" moms...

  8. Yeah, I've got a couple of old friends whose kids have finished high school. Yep. And strangely enough, it wasn't until this year that I stopped fantasizing about falling miraculously pregnant - and I'm 46 now.
